Sunset Session - Client Guide
Sunset family sessions are a great opportunity to capture your time together as a family, out in nature, during the magical light of the sunset.
Whether you prefer the beach, tall grass or rocks to climb, capturing your time together in nature allows you freedom to explore and engage as a family unit.
Is an outdoor session for me?
Before we go ahead and start talking about golden last rays of sunshine and soft light - is spending time outside as a family even work for you?
If you love exploring and don’t mind sand in your toes or strands of grass in your hair, you’ll be great. If as a family you spend time outdoors and allow your kids to roam free and get both low to the ground and up in a tree, then this session is definitely for you.
You will play, and hug and love on each other in all types of terrain and in a verity of weather conditions which brings me to my next point.
In general, unless the weather is absolutely extreme on the day of your session, I tend to go ahead. A bit or rain on and off is something Melbourne does best, right? It’s all part of the experience. We’re not here for perfectly composed images, we’re here to create memories as a family and make sure those memories are forever lasting.
What should I wear?
I’m always here for wardrobe advice in the lead up to our session and happy to go over your choices together. If you scroll down you’ll find some examples from previous sunset sessions I’ve had for inspiration.
In the meantime, here are some pointers to keep in mind:
- Pale / Muted Pastels and Neutral tones photograph well, especially when complimented with earthy tones such as Mustard, Dusted Clay, Terracotta and muted Greens. I highly recommend finding a “hero” piece of clothing first (for example a dress you really want to wear or a special shirt you’d like to include) and then build the rest of everyone’s wardrobe around that one piece.
- Try to think about colours that compliment each other rather than match and it’s always good to mix textures such as cotton, wool, denim and linen as it adds textures and depth to your photos.
- It would be best to avoid purely black or white garments as can be too dominant as well as large branding or logos.
Most importantly, both you and your kids need to feel comfortable and at ease, so try and select clothes that are soft and allow mobility and freedom to move.
At the end of the day, what you wear is only a small part of the story. I’m here to capture your time together as a family and I’ll get that regardless of what you’re wearing (or not wearing *wink* ).
So what happens on the day of our session?
I will be in touch on the morning of our session to confirm we can go ahead and discuss last minute details and exact location specifications. If we need to change locations or time due to lighting conditions, we will do so and make adjustments to suit us all.
When we meet I’ll show you where to stand and may give some guidance to start off, but what I love most is when you let your children’s natural curiosity take over and I can capture you candidly.
It’s important for me that you know - there’s no obligation for everyone to be present throughout the entire session. If any individuals need to break away for a moment or had enough and need to have some time apart from me and my camera, you should feel comfortable to do so. I’m a big believer of going with the flow and making sure this time is spent having fun and making memories.
I get nervous in front of the camera and don’t really know what to do…
Here’s a secret - most people do. Including yours truly.
It’s only natural to feel nervous but that is exactly what I’m here for and I won’t leave you hanging. I’ll guide you through some of our session and in other times will let you do what you do as a family while making sure to capture those moments for you.
We are in no rush. This session is a time for you to connect as a family, use it the way that best suits YOU.
Ok, what now?
In the weeks leading up to our session I’ll send you a short questionnaire, which will help me get to know you better and understand what your expectations from our session are.
I love chatting and getting to know you and your family prior and on our session so get in touch to go over wardrobe choices, location ideas and anything else you’d like to chat about before we meet.
