In-Home Session - Client Guide
In-home family sessions are a great opportunity to capture your time together as a family, at the place in which you are most comfortable.
Our homes are the backdrop to our most treasured memories and by having your session at home, it becomes an active part in telling your story as it is right now, at this stage in your lives as a family.
Setting up your home
Your home is an extension of you and as such, it should represent who you are.
You don’t need to change anything, but I highly recommend tidying up and making sure everything is in it’s place. Think about it like this - if you don’t want it visible in your photos, it probably shouldn’t be on display.
When I arrive at your home, I will have a little walkabout to find the best light available and may rearrange some furniture to make sure it lines well with our light source.
All rooms might get used including bedrooms. Bedsheets, quilt covers and pillows can add colour to the photos so make sure sheets are clean and aren’t too overpowering. When in doubt stick to non-printed, neutral or pastel coloured sheets.
Remember - every family is different and your home should reflect who you are. I love hearing about significant spots or special places you have in your home and always happy to document those for you.
What should I wear?
I’m always here for wardrobe advice in the lead up to our session and happy to go over your choices together. You can find some inspiration in the photos below, but in the meantime, here are some pointers to keep in mind:
- Pale Pastels and Neutral tones photograph well, especially when complimented with earthy tones such as Mustard, Dusted Clay and Muted Forest Greens.
- Try to think about colours that compliment each other rather than match and it’s always good to mix textures such as cotton, wool, denim and linen as it adds textures and depth to your photos.
- It would be best to avoid purely black or white garments as can be too dominant as well as large branding or logos.
Most importantly, both you and your kids need to feel comfortable and at ease, so try and select clothes that are soft and allow mobility and freedom to move.
At the end of the day, what you wear is only a small part of the story. I’m here to capture your time together as a family and I’ll get that regardless of what you’re wearing (or not wearing *wink* ).
So what happens on the day of our session?
When I arrive, we’ll go for a little tour of your home. This is the best time to mention specific spots you love or items you’d like for me to capture.
I’ll take a few minutes to chat and maybe ask your kids to show me their favourite items / toys / spots of the house. Then we can start our session.
It’s important for me that you know - there’s no obligation for everyone to be present throughout the entire session. The benefit of having your session at home is that individuals can break away for a moment if they’ve had enough and need to have some time apart from me and my camera. I’m a big believer of going with the flow and making sure this time is spent having fun and making memories.
I get nervous in front of the camera and don’t really know what to do…
Here’s a secret - most people do. Including yours truly.
It’s only natural to feel nervous but that is exactly what I’m here for and I won’t leave you hanging. I’ll guide you through some of our session and in other times will let you do what you do as a family while making sure to capture those moments for you.
We are in no rush. This session is a time for you to connect as a family, use it the way that best suits YOU.
Ok, what’s now?
In the weeks leading up to our session I’ll send you a short questionnaire, which will help me get to know you better and understand what your expectations from our session are.
I love chatting and getting to know you and your family prior and on our session so get in touch to go over wardrobe choices, sheets on-line shopping and anything else you’d like to chat about before we meet.
